Global growth of engineering research and development market.

Engineering Research & Development (ER&D) market enjoys fast paced growth globally. India by 2022, is projected to handle $42 billion in ER&D through indigenous Product Engineering work and outsourced services.

The Indian context: India produces two lakhs Mechanical engineering graduates annually; Meager 6% employability in Design jobs. Projected talent shortage is tens of thousands [2020-’22]. Up-skilling needed for thousands of Mechanical engineering graduates for enhancing employability and GDP growth. Similar figures for Electronics engineering with 7% employability in Product Development jobs.

Careers: Product Development industry in India & overseas needs Design/CAE/CAD/Proto/Test engineers. ISRO in Trivandrum contracts engineers with ProMeX certification. R&D institutions & establishments in Electric Mobility - KAL & CET-TrEST Park and Companies need Design & CAE engineers. Post-graduates needed for ASDC skilling initiative by Kerala’s ASAP in KTU & CUSAT engineering colleges & Polytechnics; so also for ASAP’s Community Skill Parks (CSPs) across Kerala (in Product Engineering). Skill-certified tutors needed in Academia in bulk to deliver AICTE’s model curriculum for Engineering Education [2020+].

Potential Avenues for employment for skill-certified talent in Product Engineering :-

Major drivers for New Product Development & Re-engineering projects & talent: Electric mobility, Autonomous driving, Euro-VI emission regulations, Bio-degradable material alternatives, Localisation. Economy, Scalability, Emerging-Market penetration, etc drive Cost-Reduction & Lightweighting projects.

Safer-cleaner-quieter-lighter products for automotive and transportation applications need talent in tons, skilled enough for hi-tech R&D jobs. Light-weight, fuel-efficient designs of planes & rockets demand engineers in bulk in aerospace industry, skilled enough in product innovation and simulation. Smart devices for industry, society and household demand Electronics & Computer engineers in huge numbers for Industry 4.0 jobs involving Embedded, IoT, Electronic simulation, Artificial Intelligence, ML/DL.
